Mozambique is located in southern Africa along 2,470 kilometers of beautiful Indian Ocean coast. It had an estimated population of 32 million people in 2021, 46% of whom are under the age of 15. Portuguese is the official language, but there are over 40 dialects spoken throughout the 11 provinces of the country.
The country won its independence from Portugal and became a sovereign nation in 1975, followed by a civil war from 1977-1992 that destroyed much of the fragile infrastructure in the country. In that light, the forward strides the country has made in the short time since the end of conflict are truly impressive, but major development challenges remain as illustrated below:
